Continuing on with my previous article on social networking integration (which can be found here) which touched on networking by syndication. Today I want to show you how you can maximize your exposure using Facebook Connect.
Facebook Connect is a tool designed to integrate Facebook into your website. Leveraging the Facebook API, users can login to your site with Facebook Connect with their Facebook username and password. Users will be able to do anything that would normally require a login, like commenting on blog posts. This is beneficial for both the user and the website. For users, it enables them to comment without having to fill in the usual name, email, website fields by automatically pulling the data from Facebook. For websites, when a user posts a comment, the users are offered a selection to display their comment on their Facebook profile - which they would be likely to do - increasing your exposure dramatically.
Facebook Connect is easy to setup and works seamlessly with your existing functionality. This is how you integrate Facebook Connect - like I have - for blog commenting.
1. Create a new file called 'xd_reciever.htm', copy it exactly as follows.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" >
2. Add a few things to your existing pages to be able to use Facebook Connect.
- Your page needs to have a DOCTYPE:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
- Your HTML tag need to include a Facebook specific call. Your page should already contain the first 'xmlns', but the second should be added:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:fb="http://www.facebook.com/2008/fbml">
- Add the Facebook login button code:
That is how you set up your Facebook login in its simplest form. Additional advanced customizations that made to my code with the Facebook Connect can be found below. I will be adding to this regularly. Also, if you have any questions or want to see how I implemented something, comment below and I'll try and help you as best I can.
