If you haven't had much success in the past with trying to get your pages to the top of Google, or any other search engine. Here's some very simple tips that you should know to bring your domain up a few notches and on to the front page using basic search engine optimization (SEO).

There are many factors which affect the overall rank of pages within search engines. None are as important as the following:

  • URL: the full location and all GET request components are one of the most important of all SEO methods in use by designers. The keywords found by the search bot traversing your URL will order the keywords by significance in the order that they appear from left to right.

eg. www.whitbreaddesign.com/?post=1-Building_Your_Website order by significance in the order the keywords are found: 1. Building, 2. Website

Keywords like "Your" would be ignored due to the commonality of the word

  • Page Title: The name of the page, which is taken from the <title> tags in the <head> portion of the html code, is also very important to a pages' rank. The significance of the keywords here work the same way as the URL.

  • Header tags: The use of <h*> tags can also prove to be quite important. Your <h*> tags are important if the keywords listed in it are backed up by content that is related to them. Otherwise, the search engine will know you are trying to cheat and will lower the relevance of you site to that particular search.

  • PageRank: Google - like other search engines - uses a system called PageRank which assigns a 0-10 value to every website. This ranking decides where a site will be shown on a page of search results with the highest rankings listed first. This is more of a cumulative grade of how relevant your site is and can only be changed by having relevant, meaningful content on your page.

Other than the URL keywords, all other SEO optimization improvements should happen by accident. There is no substitution for designing an excellent site with relevant content and proper use of html tagging throughout.
